THE METHOD
About Germanium: why the sequence beats the method
Germanium is a free 77-day roadmap from A1 to A2. Its thesis: adults fail from unsequenced abundance, not bad methods — one page a day, honest reviews.
VON GERMANIUM
Research Desk — reviewed against Goethe A1–A2 frameworks
DIE ROADMAP · 77 TAGE · A1 → A2
Tag 001 — beginne den Weg
Germanium is built on an unfashionable observation: most adult learners do not lack material, and they do not lack a method — they lack an assembly. The free German web is enormous: Deutsche Welle alone publishes thousands of structured lessons, YouTube carries a grammar explainer for every rule, exercise sheets and shared Anki decks fill every gap. But it lives on different platforms that don't know about each other. Every evening, a beginner faced with that scatter doesn't choose — they stall. The failure mode is not bad technique; it is re-deciding, daily, whether to practice at all.
So Germanium is not a course. It is a road: 77 days, one page per day, every decision already made. Grammar appears exactly when the course needs it, stated in one sentence with its trap named. Listening is one verified lesson, not a playlist. Speaking is out loud, daily, timed — because language is a motor skill, not a recognition task. Vocabulary is tagged daily and reviewed on the schedule of forgetting, not the schedule of enthusiasm.
The 77-Day Curriculum Architecture & Phasing
The study plan organizes the CEFR A1 to A2 progression into five structured developmental blocks, punctuated by scheduled consolidation milestones (Rückblicke) and formal exam rehearsals:
| Phase | Days | Core Linguistic Milestone | Integrated Grammar Focus | Verification Checkpoint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1: Foundations | Days 01–15 | Survival greetings, alphabet, numbers, basic transactional ordering | Present tense verbs, nominative pronouns, singular/plural nouns | Diagnostic self-test & audio phonetic review |
| Phase 2: Accusative & Daily Routines | Days 16–30 | Navigating work, home, shopping, making appointments | Accusative masculine shifts (den/einen), modal verbs, separable prefixes | Rückblick 1: 50-card consolidation deck |
| Phase 3: Dative & Spoken Past | Days 31–45 | Narrating events, giving directions, describing family/home | Dative case indirect objects, fixed dative prepositions, Perfekt tense | Rückblick 2 & Goethe A1 full mock rehearsal |
| Phase 4: Two-Way Prepositions & Subclauses | Days 46–60 | Complex spatial descriptions, giving reasons and opinions | Wechselpräpositionen, weil/dass/wenn subclauses, adjective declension | Rückblick 3: Two-way preposition matrix check |
| Phase 5: A2 Synthesis & Exam Readiness | Days 61–77 | Sustained dialogues, formal correspondence, B1 bridge topics | Präteritum of sein/haben/modals, Konjunktiv II, comparative/superlative | Goethe A2 / telc A2 full diagnostic examination |
Interactive Self-Diagnostic: Self-Study System Integrity
- [ ] Single Daily Track: Do you open exactly one curated lesson page each morning instead of browsing multiple apps and forums?
- [ ] Motor Production Priority: Do you speak aloud for at least 15 minutes during each session rather than passively consuming silent multiple-choice drills?
- [ ] Honest Spaced Repetition: Do you clear your daily Anki review queue before introducing any new grammar modules?
- [ ] Zero-Fluff Grammar Application: When learning a new rule, do you immediately compose 5 authentic sentences relevant to your daily routine?
- [ ] Pre-Decided Minimums: On your busiest workday, do you reliably execute your 10-minute floor session rather than breaking the sequence?
Sources and verification
- The course spine is Nicos Weg ↗, Deutsche Welle's free A1–B1 video curriculum — public broadcasting, no upsell — one resource among the thousands Germanium pools and sequences.
- 152 lesson links are verified by the build itself before the roadmap can ship: every deep-link is curl-checked, and precision is labeled (lesson, hub, reference, final test) rather than implied.
- Grammar sheets, when referenced, cite the rule and its standard exceptions — nothing invented to sound authoritative.
- The review logic (5 Rückblicke, 2 exam gates) follows spaced-repetition practice and the official Goethe exam format.
What Germanium is not
It is not an app — there is nothing to install and no streak to lose. It is not a game; the only number it tracks is what you actually did. And it is not a promise of fluency in a weekend: it is a promise of A2 in 77 honest sessions, which is a different and better thing — independence, from which fluency can grow.
Is Germanium free?
The roadmap and the library you are reading are free, and the underlying course is free. The dashboard runs without an account; sign-in exists only if you want your archive synced across devices.
Why 'Germanium'?
Germanium is element 32 — Ge. The name is a small joke of construction: German + ium, stated like a physical fact. The design borrows the register of technical manuals and editorial print because the road itself is a document, not a game.
How does Germanium protect learners from grammar overload?
By strictly decoupling conceptual understanding from lexical explosion. Each grammar topic is introduced alongside a single high-frequency vocabulary domain, ensuring your working memory focuses on the mechanical rule (such as verb-final placement in subordinate clauses) rather than struggling with unknown words.
Can I use Germanium alongside an in-person Goethe or VHS language course?
Yes. Many learners use Germanium as an evening accelerator. While group classroom courses move at the pace of the slowest student, Germanium provides the rigorous daily spaced repetition, listening shadowing, and diagnostic mock papers that ensure you excel on your official CEFR exam.
