B1 is modular, which sounds like mercy. What it really is, is a clock: the full certificate exists only if all four modules are passed within one year at the same centre — and that year starts with your first result.

By the day you sit it you have already paid € 220–350 and spent a year of evenings on the language. B1 repays that with four separately certified competences — Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen, each passed alone at 60 of 100. People quote the comfortable half of that sentence. The uncomfortable half is what costs: walk out with „Lesen bestanden“ on one sheet and fail the rest, and you are not merely three modules short — you are three module bills and a calendar problem, because the Gesamtzeugnis is issued only when all four results land inside one year at the same centre. Nobody discovers that in the room. They discover it in the scores. THE B1 ARITHMETIC — AND THE ONE RULE THAT VOIDS A WHOLE TEXT

Thirty correct answers become a hundred points. And in Schreiben, a zero in Erfüllung does not cost you a criterion — it deletes the task.

LESEN AND HÖREN

30 items each, 30 raw points, scaled × 3,33 onto 100 Ergebnispunkte. Pass at 60 — which is 18 of the 30 items. The two objective modules together ask 60 items, half again the 40 you met at A2, and two of the four audio parts are played ONCE, with no second pass to repair a missed sentence.

SCHREIBEN

Three tasks, 100 points direct: a private e-mail (~80 words, 40), a forum post (~80 words, 40), a half-formal e-mail (~40 words, 20). Four criteria each — Erfüllung, Kohärenz, Wortschatz, Strukturen. Erfüllung = 0 means the whole text scores 0, however good the German around it, and a text under half the required length lands there automatically.

SPRECHEN

100 points of its own: planning together 28, the five-slide presentation 40, feedback plus a question 16, pronunciation 16. The Vorstellung is not marked at all. The presentation alone outweighs the entire A2 oral — and it is the one part you can rehearse to the minute, because the five slides are given.

THE B1 DAY — WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

  • —Written: ONE 165-minute sitting — LESEN (65) → HÖREN (40) → SCHREIBEN (60) — the answer sheets collected part by part, so a slow Lesen is taken out of your Schreiben.
  • —Hören Teil 2 und Teil 3 hören Sie nur EINMAL (Vortrag/Führung und ein Gespräch); Teil 1 und Teil 4 zweimal. Ein Beispiel gibt es nur vor Teil 1 und Teil 4.
  • —Lesen Teil 3: sieben Situationen gegen ZEHN Anzeigen A–J. Die Anzeige aus dem Beispiel ist verbraucht, jede Anzeige wird einmal benutzt — und für genau eine Situation gibt es keine Anzeige: Schreiben Sie 0.
  • —Lesen Teil 4: sieben Leserbriefe, eine Frage für jede Person — ist sie für ein Verbot? Ja oder Nein. Lesen Teil 5 hat kein Beispiel, und die Aufgaben stehen nicht in der Reihenfolge des Textes.

  • •Cornelsen also publishes a B1 Prüfungstraining title alongside it. We have not read that one, so we print no specs for it rather than guess at them.

WHO SITS B1 — AND WHAT THIS KIT IS FOR

  • —Anyone who has just cleared A2 and assumes B1 is „more of the same“. It is not: the objective surface grows from 40 items to 60, two audio parts come once, and the writing is graded on four criteria with a zero-that-voids-the-text rule.
  • —Candidates who need B1 as a document — the settlement and citizenship track, the nursing and care recognition route, a university preparation course, a visa that names B1 explicitly.

EXAM DAY — THE PART FORUMS GET WRONG

  • —Lesen 65 → Hören 40 → Schreiben 60, in one uninterrupted sitting, with the answer sheets collected part by part. A slow start on Lesen is taken directly out of your Schreiben — exactly as the countdown in these papers takes it out of yours.
  • —Hören runs without stopping. The CD is not paused between the Teile; the reading pauses are already on the recording, so the five minutes you get for 30 answers are the only five minutes you get.
  • —Everything is transferred to the Antwortbogen. The ad letters, the „0“, and the Ja/Nein ban column are where the transfer errors cluster — so type them here, not into a margin.
  • —The oral is a pair exam with two examiners, and for Teil 2 you choose one topic from three, prepare alone for 15 minutes and may use your own notes. That is the single most scriptable 40 points in the whole exam.
  • —B1 is modular: each module is sat, passed and repeated on its own, and the Gesamtzeugnis is issued only if all four are passed within one year at the same centre. That is genuinely good news — and it is also why discovering WHICH module fails matters more at B1 than anywhere else, because that one is a second bill and a second date.
  • —Registration closes weeks ahead at most centres and results take two to four weeks; timings differ, so check yours before fixing the date.

That figure is centre-set: there is no national price list, and every centre fixes its own fee. German centres commonly charge about € 220–350 for the complete exam, or € 70–120 for a single module (observed ranges, not official prices; your own centre's figure is the only binding one). The interesting part is the structure. Goethe prices by module, and a module is not a small line item: at one German centre's published list (which prints its B2 and C1 figures, since the per-module structure is identical across levels) a single module costs € 119 against € 265 for all four, and three modules cost € 265 as well — the same as four. So 'I will just repeat everything' saves nothing, and a failed module is a real bill, a new date, and a year on the clock.

  • What is the pass mark for Goethe B1, and is it modular?

    Each module is passed on its own: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen all need 60 of 100. Lesen and Hören give 30 items each, scaled × 3,33 onto 100 — so 18 of those 30 items is the line.     That is Lesen Teil 3. You get ten ads, A to J, and seven situations.     No — and it says so plainly. These are Germanium's own mock papers calibrated to the official B1 Modellsatz grid and cross-checked against the Klett Übungsbuch „Mit Erfolg zum Goethe-/ÖSD-Zertifikat B1“. The official Modellsatz is free on the Goethe-Institut site; this kit is the additional rehearsal: four papers instead of one, reasoning on every item, and the per-part verdict printed automatically.

  • One rule in the writing task can zero a whole text — what is it?

    Erfüllung. Every Schreiben task is marked on four criteria — Erfüllung, Kohärenz, Wortschatz, Strukturen — and if Erfüllung scores 0, the entire text scores 0 regardless of how good the German around it is. That happens automatically when the text is under half the required length or misses the topic. It is the single most expensive rule in the paper and it is barely mentioned in free prep material, so the solution books state it in the words the examiners use.
