Every module is passed on its own at 60 of 100 — which is 18 of the 30 objective items. What is the pass mark for Goethe B1, and is it modular?
Each module is passed on its own: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen all need 60 of 100. Lesen and Hören give 30 items each, scaled × 3,33 onto 100 — so 18 of those 30 items is the line. Unlike A1 and A2, B1 is modular: you sit, pass and repeat each module separately, and the full certificate (Gesamtzeugnis) is issued only if all four modules are passed within one year at the same centre. That is genuinely good news — and it is also why finding out WHICH module fails is worth more at B1 than at any other level: it is a second module fee, a second date, and a clock that is already running.
How long is the Goethe B1 written exam?
165 minutes in one uninterrupted sitting: Lesen 65, Hören 40 (roughly 35 minutes of audio plus five minutes to transfer all 30 answers), Schreiben 60. The answer sheets are collected part by part, so a slow start on Lesen is taken directly out of your Schreiben — exactly as the countdown in these papers takes it out of yours. In the oral, you get 15 minutes of preparation alone, and for the presentation you choose one topic from three.
Why does the exam say „Schreiben Sie 0“?
That is Lesen Teil 3. You get ten ads, A to J, and seven situations. The ad used in the example is burned, each ad is used only once — and exactly one situation has no matching ad at all, so the instruction is to write 0. Candidates who have never met the rule spend that item hunting for a match that does not exist, and lose the item plus the ad that another situation needed. The rule is printed on the task here, marked in the key, and the 0 is a real button.

Miss one Leitpunkt entirely, and criterion 1 drops to 0; use the wrong register throughout (du in an email to a boss, or Sie to a friend), and criterion 3 drops.
