The Goethe A1 (Start Deutsch 1) is a friendly exam with sharp edges: nothing on it is academically hard, but points are lost to format surprises, not difficulty. Walk in having done each of the checks below and the exam is a formality; walk in cold and the speaking part will surprise you.

Know the format cold

  • Hören (~20 min) — announcements and short dialogues, multiple choice. Played once — train your ear to catch names, times, prices on a single pass.
  • Lesen (~25 min) — short notes, ads, emails: matching plus multiple choice. Scan for Wer/Wann/Wo rather than reading fully.
  • Schreiben (~20 min) — fill in a form, then a short message (~30 words) around a scenario (sick note, invitation, excuse). Learn the three-sentence skeleton: greeting → content → closing question.
  • Sprechen (~15 min, group) — three parts: introduce yourself (prepare it, memorize the skeleton, not the script), ask and answer topic questions with a partner, make and respond to requests.

The week-before checklist

  1. 01Do one complete official model test ↗ under exam conditions — timed, no pauses, phone in another room. The condition check matters more than the score.
  2. 02Rehearse your self-introduction out loud until it is boring — origin, job, family, hobby, why German. This is free points; there is no excuse to lose them.
  3. 03Drill numbers as sounds: prices, phone numbers, times, dates. Hören loves them; nerves eat them.
  4. 04Prepare six request formulas (Können Sie…? Könnten Sie bitte…? Ich hätte gern…) — the Sprechen part 3 runs on them.
  5. 05Sleep more, study less the last 48 hours. A1 is a floor exam; fatigue costs more than one extra vocabulary pass gains.

One official model test is the floor — full rehearsal is the ceiling. The free timed Goethe A1 Paper 1 and three complete Start Deutsch 1 mock papers (original material in the exact format, with separate solution books and worked transcripts) let you sit the paper three times before you sit it once for real.

Interactive Self-Diagnostic: Pre-Exam Readiness Checklist

  • [ ] Spoken Alphabet & Numbers Drill: Can you spell your surname out loud in German without hesitating on vowels (A, E, I, O, U) or diphthongs, and recite your phone number digit by digit?
  • [ ] 30-Word Message Formatting: Can you compose a complete message with salutation, 3 body sentences covering all 3 prompt points, and a sign-off within 15 minutes?
  • [ ] Single-Pass Audio Stamina: When listening to a train announcement in Hören Teil 2, can you extract platform and delay details without requiring a repeat playback?
  • [ ] Request Formulation Speed: Can you immediately formulate a polite request using Können Sie bitte... or Ich möchte gern... when shown an everyday object card?

How hard is the Goethe A1 exam?

It is a floor exam — most prepared candidates pass, and the common failures are format surprises and speaking-freeze, not grammar. Preparation is 20% German and 80% exam behavior: know what A1 requires, do two model tests out loud under time, and the exam measures what you already own.

How do I introduce myself in the Goethe A1 speaking part?

Prepare a skeleton, not a script: name, origin, where you live, job or studies, family, one hobby, why you are learning German — five or six sentences you can vary. Rehearse it aloud until it is boring, because examiners reward natural delivery over memorized text and will ask one follow-up question your script cannot answer. This part is free points; nobody should lose them.

What is the pass mark for the Goethe A1 exam?

60% overall — and Goethe requires a minimum 30% in the written and oral parts combined, so a strong listening score cannot fully carry a frozen speaking performance. In practice: the written parts are where points are banked (format familiarity wins them), and the speaking part needs only competence, not brilliance. Goethe's own model tests ↗ are the honest calibration.

What documents must I bring into the exam room?

Bring your original valid passport or national ID card (the exact identification document used during registration) and your official Goethe examination booking confirmation. Personal bags, mobile phones, and wristwatches must be stored in secure lockers outside the examination hall.
