uni-assist is the shared application-processing service for 180 German universities: instead of (or before) applying to the university directly, your certificates and application are evaluated by uni-assist first. For Indian applicants it is the second domino after APS — and the stage where the most deadlines die, because uni-assist's processing time is not counted inside the university's application deadline. This page covers the fees, the 4–6 week processing reality, the VPD (the document most Indian applicants actually need), and the sequencing that keeps all three stages alive.
What is uni-assist and do you need it?
uni-assist evaluates whether your international school or university certificates meet German higher-education requirements — for its 180+ member universities. Three application situations exist, and the first thing to do is find out which one is yours:
- University processes applications via uni-assist: you apply through My assist and uni-assist forwards the evaluated result. Most Indian applicants meet this case.
- University requires the VPD, but you apply direct: uni-assist issues the evaluation document, you upload it in the university's own portal. Common for TU9 and many public universities.
- University is not a uni-assist member: you apply directly and may still need other evaluations — check the university's page, not a blog's list.

The classic misunderstanding: €75 is per application per semester, not a one-time registration. Applying to five universities through uni-assist costs €75 + 4×€30 = €195. The processing clock starts only when the paid online application form has arrived — an unpaid application sits untouched while your deadline burns.
What is the VPD and how do you get one?
The VPD — Vorprüfungsdokumentation, preliminary review documentation — is uni-assist's certificate stating which of your certificates were submitted, how they evaluate against German requirements, and how your grade converts into the German system. Universities that ask for it in direct applications use it as the standardised interpretation of an Indian transcript. Getting one:

One account holds all your applications and the VPD. Fill in your data exactly as in your passport.

Submit a VPD application
In My assist, applying to a university that needs a VPD creates the VPD request — the application IS the request. Upload the checklist documents: certificates, transcripts, translations where required.

Pay and wait 4–6 weeks
The €75 fee covers the VPD application. Processing usually takes 4–6 weeks from the paid online form — the VPD lands as a download in My assist, and it is valid for one year from issue, regardless of which semester you targeted.

Apply to the university with the VPD
The VPD is not an application. You still apply to the university (direct or via uni-assist) and upload the VPD there before the university's deadline. uni-assist states this explicitly: plan enough time — request the VPD as early as possible.
uni-assist processing time: the deadline trap, stated plainly
The official processing figure is 4–6 weeks from receipt of the paid application — with regional bands that have run shorter (2–3 weeks for some regions) and peak-season stretches longer. The trap: German university deadlines are receipt deadlines. If the deadline is 15 January and uni-assist needs six weeks, the paid application must be in by early December. The students who miss Winter-semester deadlines almost never miss them at the university — they miss them at uni-assist, six weeks earlier.

Do you need German for uni-assist?
No — uni-assist's portal and procedure run in English, and nothing in the evaluation needs German. The language question belongs to the university admission (English-taught programmes ask English proof; German-taught ask certificates) and, later, to life in Germany. The efficient move is unchanged: the 4–6 week uni-assist wait and the 3–8 week APS wait overlap — that window is where the free 77-day plan turns waiting time into a usable A2.
How much does uni-assist cost for Indian students?
€75 for the first application in a semester and €30 for each additional one — so five uni-assist universities cost €195 total, per semester. The VPD application is covered by the same fee structure. Pay only on uni-assist's own portal: the fee is per-application processing, charged when the paid online form arrives, and the clock starts there.
How long does uni-assist take to process?
Four to six weeks from receipt of the paid online application is the official band, with peak-season stretches beyond it. Critically, uni-assist's processing time is not part of the university's deadline: if your course closes 15 January, the paid application must reach uni-assist roughly six weeks before. Plan the deadline backwards from the university, not forward from today.
What is a VPD from uni-assist?
The Vorprüfungsdokumentation — preliminary review documentation — is uni-assist's certificate listing which of your certificates were submitted, how they evaluate for German higher education, and how your grade converts into the German grading system. Can I apply for the VPD before I get my APS certificate?
Yes for most procedures — APS and uni-assist are separate evaluations with no dependency between them for the majority of applicant groups, and both are valid independent documents (APS for life, VPD for one year). The exceptions are procedure-specific; check both checklists for your applicant group. Starting both waits in parallel is the standard efficient road.
