The short version
Germanium sets no advertising, analytics, or tracking cookies — no Google Analytics, no Meta pixel, nothing. That is also why there is no consent banner: there is nothing to consent to beyond what the site strictly needs to function. Two parts of the product live outside this site: sign-in happens on Auth0's hosted login page, and the crypto payment flow stores nothing in your browser beyond a signed access token for the kit you bought. What does run in your browser is listed below, exhaustively.
Strictly necessary storage
| Item | Type | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auth0 session cache (@@auth0spajs@@…) | localStorage + in-memory | Keeps you signed in after a page refresh and supplies the signed token every data request carries. Set only when you sign in. | Until you sign out (or the refresh token rotates) |
| Signed-out progress (germanium.anonState) | localStorage | Your day-by-day course progress before you create an account, so a refresh does not lose it. Cleared once you sign in. | Until you sign in or clear it |
| Kit access tokens (germanium.access.v1) | localStorage | A signed token per exam kit you bought, so an unlocked kit opens without re-checking the server on every visit. Set only after a verified payment. | Until you sign out or clear it |
| Anki media cache | IndexedDB | Audio/images from a deck you imported, so cards play without re-decoding. Never uploaded anywhere. | Until you clear it |
What third parties set
- Auth0 — the identity provider. Signing in leaves this site for Auth0's hosted login page, which runs its own bot check and may set its own short-lived cookies on auth0.com. Those belong to Auth0, are governed by Auth0's policy, and exist only while you sign in.
- YouTube / Deutsche Welle — lesson videos play on DW's pages when you follow a lesson link out. Any cookies there are set by them under their policy, only after you leave our site.
Does Germanium use cookies to track me across other websites?
No. There are no advertising or analytics cookies of any kind — no cross-site tracking, no retargeting, no social media pixels. The storage list above is exhaustive.
Do I need to accept cookies to use Germanium?
The full course works with storage blocked — progress simply lives in memory for the session and disappears when the tab closes. Staying signed in, and opening a kit you have bought, are the only features that strictly require local browser storage.
Why does Germanium not show a cookie consent banner?
Because consent is only legally required for non-essential cookies, and Germanium sets none — no analytics, no advertising, no tracking. The only storage is the Auth0 session that keeps you signed in, your progress before you sign in, an access token for each kit you bought, and the local cache of a deck you imported.
Managing storage
Signing out clears the auth session. Clearing site data in your browser (Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Cookies and site data) removes everything Germanium has stored — your signed-out progress, the kit access tokens, and the Anki cache. Purchases themselves are not lost by clearing storage: they live on your account server-side, so signing back in restores your kits. There is nothing hidden to find — this page lists all of it.
