The grid will not surprise you. What the ÖSD paper can cost you is what you hear — and the clock you did not know was already running.

ÖSD Zertifikat B1 and Goethe-Zertifikat B1 share one grid, one threshold and one set of task types — which is exactly why the ÖSD is not a softer paper: 30 items in Lesen, 30 in Hören, three writing tasks under the Erfüllung rule, five slides of oral. What differs is yours alone: the audio runs in Austrian and Swiss voices as readily as German ones, and Teil 2 of Sprechen gives you two topics on the Blatt rather than Goethe's three. By the morning you sit it, you have already paid € 205 at your centre and spent a year of evenings on the language. The exam is not measuring that year — it is measuring whether you have rehearsed its four formats under its own rules. Fail a module and you do not lose the language; you buy it back: a module fee, a new date, a level three months colder — while the one-year window for the full certificate you actually applied for keeps ticking. THE ÖSD ARITHMETIC — 60 OF 100 PER MODULE, AND THE RULE THAT VOIDS A TEXT

Every module is passed on its own at 60 of 100. Which sounds generous — until Erfüllung scores zero and a writing task in good German is worth nothing at all.

LESEN AND HÖREN

30 items each, 30 raw points, scaled × 3,33 onto 100 Ergebnispunkte — the pass line is 18 of those 30. Two of the four Hören Teile are heard exactly ONCE (Teil 2 and Teil 3), with one minute of reading time and no second pass, and the whole recording hands you five minutes to transfer all 30 answers. This is a reading-speed test wearing an audio costume, and it is the module most candidates underestimate by exactly the margin it costs.

SCHREIBEN

Three tasks, 100 points direct: a private e-mail (~80 words, 40), a Diskussionsbeitrag reacting to a Gästebuch post (~80 words, 40), a short half-formal e-mail (~40 words, 20). Four criteria each — Erfüllung, Kohärenz, Wortschatz, Strukturen. Erfüllung = 0 scores the whole text 0, however good the German around it, and a text under half the required length lands there automatically. It is the single most expensive line in the paper, and no answer key can tell you whether you just crossed it.

SPRECHEN

100 points of its own, in a pair: planning together 28, the five-slide Präsentation 40, feedback plus a question 16, Aussprache und Intonation 16. The Einführungsgespräch is not marked at all. The presentation alone outweighs the entire A2 oral — and it is the one part you can rehearse to the minute, because the five Folien are given. Most candidates leave it until last, then speak about it first.

THE THREE THINGS THAT COST ÖSD CANDIDATES A MODULE — AND NOTHING IN A FREE MODELLSATZ CORRECTS

The voices are Austrian and Swiss as well as German.

Kassa, Bankomatkarte, Sackerl, Perron, Velo, Jänner — the Modellsatz itself prints reader letters dated in Graz, St. Gallen, Winterthur and Cuxhaven, and the audio speaks that range. A candidate who has only ever heard a Berlin studio loses items to vocabulary, never to grammar, and it never shows up in a book's answer key. This is why the fifth cheat sheet is ÖSD's own: the pluricentric pairs, side by side.

Teil 2 gives you two topics, not three.

Goethe prints three and lets you choose. ÖSD prints two — Thema 1 und Thema 2 — each with its own five Folien, and you prepare for 15 minutes alone. Less choice means less room to dodge the topic you have been avoiding, which is precisely why our papers print BOTH topics with both Folien sets: you rehearse the topic you would not have picked.

Lesen Teil 3 hands you seven situations against ten ads A–J. The example's ad is burned, every ad is used once — and for exactly one situation there is no ad, so you write 0. Candidates who have never met that rule spend the item hunting for a match that does not exist, and lose the ad another situation needed. We print the rule on the task, mark it in the key, and make the „0“ a real button.

THE ÖSD DAY — WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

  • —Written: ONE 165-minute sitting in the recommended order LESEN (65) → HÖREN (40) → SCHREIBEN (60), with at least fifteen minutes between the modules. Die Losungen werden am Ende jedes Moduls auf den Antwortbogen übertragen — planen Sie dafür fünf Minuten INNERHALB der Prüfungszeit ein.

THE ÖSD RULE THAT DECIDES WHETHER YOUR MONEY WAS SPENT WELL

Each module can be repeated as often as you like. The certificate still only exists if all four land inside one year, at the same centre — and that year starts with your first passed module.

Lesen, Hören, Schreiben und Sprechen werden getrennt bewertet und getrennt bestanden. Jedes Modul erhält sein eigenes Modulzeugnis und kann beliebig oft wiederholt werden. One module is roughly a third of the exam fee, and no centre refunds the parts you sat while you wait: at the Austrian centre whose list this page cites, a single module is € 68 against € 205 for the complete ZB1. So the exam you hoped to sit once becomes a second bill, and then a third — each with its own date, none of them covered by the money already spent. The module you would fail is not random. It is the one you never sat under a clock.

ÖSD HAS SAID IT PLAINLY — THE DIGITAL AND PAPER FORMATS ARE IDENTICAL

Since 1 January 2024 the ÖSD B1 can be sat on screen. ÖSD certifies that the structure and the task formats of both versions are the same.

Which means a printed Modelltest is rehearsal for a format many centres no longer use: you mark it, you round your own score up, and you never find out that Hören 3 passed you by once and never came back. Here the Kreuz boxes click, the ad letters A–J are real buttons, the „0“ is its own answer, the transcript stays hidden until you submit, and the moment the clock dies the paper grades itself against all four ÖSD thresholds. There is no scenario in which a candidate benefits from practising a format they will not be sitting.

  • •Klett's Mit Erfolg zum Goethe-/ÖSD-Zertifikat B1 — Übungsbuch (Hantschel/Weber; ISBN 978-3-12-675850-5) is the book this pack was calibrated against, line by line. It is the joint Goethe/ÖSD title for exactly the reason this pack reuses the B1 engine: one grid, two examining bodies. One authentic Modelltest, wrapped in a training chapter for every exam part, a Wortschatz chapter and a Strukturen chapter running from Präsens to Konjunktiv II.
  • •Its audio is on a CD, and the transcripts sit at the back of the book — good material on the book's schedule, in German-German voices. ÖSD's own Modellsatz sounds different: its reader letters are dated in Graz, St. Gallen, Winterthur and Cuxhaven, and its ads print Kassa, Bankomatkarte and Velo. A candidate who has only ever heard Berlin loses items to words, not to grammar, and it never shows up in a book's answer key.
  • •Cornelsen publishes a B1 Prüfungstraining title as well. We have not read it, so we print no specs for it rather than guess at them.

  • ×Grade you the moment you stop writing, and say why one Kreuz is wrong and another right. A key gives you the letter, never the trap.
  • ×Apply ÖSD modularity to YOUR paper: which module would pass this morning, and which one you would be booking again at a module fee.
  • ×Answer the Austrian voices. A German-German CD cannot teach you that Perron is a platform and Sackerl is a bag — and both appear in the items.
  • ×Let you sit the same test again tomorrow. A printed Modelltest is spent once, then it sits on the shelf while you pay for the retake.

Your centre's list is the only binding one, and it is worth reading closely, because the structure is the whole story: a module costs about a third of the exam, so the modules you fail are bought back one at a time — each with its own fee and its own date. And ÖSD certifies that arithmetic in writing: a single passed module earns a Modulzeugnis, and the full certificate is issued only when all four are passed within one year at the same centre.

  • Is ÖSD Zertifikat B1 the same exam as Goethe-Zertifikat B1?

    They share one grid — the same five Lesen Teile over 30 items, the same four Hören Teile over 30 with Teil 2 and Teil 3 heard only once, the same three writing tasks at 40/40/20, the same five-slide oral, the same 60/100 per module. They are not the same certificate and not the same examining body: you sit ÖSD through ÖSD, you are marked by ÖSD, and the paper sounds different. ÖSD's own Modellsatz prints reader letters dated in Graz, St. Gallen, Winterthur and Cuxhaven, and its audio speaks Austrian and Swiss as readily as German. That is the difference this kit rehearses.

  • What is the pass mark for ÖSD B1, and can I repeat a module?

    Each module is passed on its own at 60 of 100. Lesen and Hören give 30 items each, scaled × 3,33 onto 100 Ergebnispunkte — so the line is 18 of those 30 items. Schreiben and Sprechen are reported on 100 directly. Every module can be repeated as often as you need, and a passed module earns its own Modulzeugnis. The one deadline to know is the certificate: ÖSD issues the Gesamtzertifikat only when all four modules are passed within one year at the same Prüfungszentrum, and that year starts with your first result — not when you decide to finish.

  • How long is the ÖSD B1 written exam, and what is heard only once?

    One 165-minute sitting in the recommended order LESEN (65) → HÖREN (40) → SCHREIBEN (60), with at least fifteen minutes between the modules — and the five minutes needed to transfer each module's answers to the Antwortbogen are inside that time, not extra. Hören Teil 2 (Vortrag or Führung) and Teil 3 (a conversation between two people) are played exactly ONCE; Teil 1 and Teil 4 twice. The recording is not paused between the Teile, so a slow read of the items is taken directly out of the audio.

  • Why does the paper say „In diesem Fall schreiben Sie 0“?

    That is Lesen Teil 3: seven situations against ten ads A–J. The ad used in the example is burned, each ad is used only once — and for exactly one situation there is no matching ad at all, so the instruction is to write 0. Candidates who have never met the rule spend that item hunting for a match that does not exist and lose the ad that another situation needed. The rule is printed on the task here, marked in the key, and the 0 is a real button.

  • Can the ÖSD B1 be taken digitally?

    Yes — since 1 January 2024 the exam can also be sat on screen, and ÖSD states that the structure and the task formats of the digital and paper versions are identical. Practising on paper with a pencil is therefore rehearsal for the older of the two formats: here the Kreuz boxes click, the ad letters are real buttons, the transcript stays hidden until you submit, and the countdown locks at 0:00 the way a screen-based sitting does.

  • What exactly is in the ÖSD B1 kit?

  • One rule in the writing task can zero a whole text — what is it?

    Erfüllung. Every Schreiben task is marked on four criteria — Erfüllung, Kohärenz, Wortschatz, Strukturen — and if Erfüllung scores 0, the entire text scores 0 no matter how good the German around it is. That happens automatically when the text is under half the required length or misses the task. It is the most expensive rule in the paper and the least discussed, so the solution books state it in the words the examiners use.

  • Is this an official ÖSD paper?

    No — and the page says so plainly.
