A2 — THE EXPANSION

German A2 vocabulary: the words that carry everyday life

The A2 vocabulary expansion, domain by domain — opinions, work, bureaucracy, travel — plus the connector layer that makes German speech sound adult.

A2 doubles the vocabulary to roughly 1,300 words, but the new words are shaped differently from A1's: alongside new domains come the small words that connect and color — connectors, particles, opinions — and the verb+case pairs that make sentences sound adult. Both layers, mapped below.

The connector & particle layer — A2's secret weapon

This is the layer that makes A2 sound like A2. It is small (about 40 words) and disproportionately powerful, because it carries the grammar of connected speech:

  • Reason & contrast: weil · deshalb · trotzdem · obwohl (B1 preview) · denn
  • Sequence & time: dann · danach · vorher · während · seit
  • Softeners & color: eigentlich · nämlich · vielleicht · übrigens · wohl
  • Opinion scaffolding: Ich finde, … · meiner Meinung nach · Ich glaube, … · Meiner Erfahrung nach…

Interactive Self-Diagnostic: A2 Lexical Breadth Checklist

  • [ ] Abstract Noun Retrievability: Can you recall gender and plural for core abstract nouns (die Erfahrung, die Meinung, das Problem, die Lösung) without hesitation?
  • [ ] Prepositional Verb Coupling: Do you know governing prepositions for high-yield verbs like denken (an + Akk), warten (auf + Akk), and gehören (zu + Dat)?
  • [ ] Reflexive Pronoun Accuracy: In reflexive verbs (sich freuen, sich interessieren, sich erinnern), do you select the correct reflexive pronouns (mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich)?
  • [ ] Modal Particle Recognition: Can you parse nuance words (denn, mal, doch, eigentlich) in colloquial dialogue without misinterpreting the core message?

How many words do I need to stop translating in my head?

It's less a number than a density: learners stop translating around the point where the top 2,000 words + connectors arrive automatically — typically mid-B1. A2's 1,300 reduces the translation reflex dramatically for daily domains; the connector layer is what makes the remaining gaps survivable in conversation without dictionaries.

What are the most important German connectors to learn?

Six carry most of connected speech: weil (because — reasons), deshalb (therefore), aber (but), dass (that — reported content), wenn (if/when), and trotzdem (nevertheless). Add the softeners (eigentlich, nämlich, vielleicht, übrigens) and you sound adult at A2. This ~40-word layer is the highest-leverage vocabulary in the level — it is the grammar of connected speech as much as vocabulary.

Should I learn German verbs with their cases?

Yes — verb+case is one card, always: helfen + Dativ, warten auf + Akkusativ, sich freuen auf + Akkusativ. German marks the difference openly where English hides it (Ich helfe dir*, Das gefällt mir*), so a verb learned bare produces case errors forever, while the pair learned together produces correct sentences automatically. A hundred of these pairs quietly upgrade every sentence you build.

How many words per day should I add to reach the A2 vocabulary target?

Aim for 10 to 12 new words per day. At this pace, expanding from the 650-word A1 base to the 1,300-word A2 threshold requires roughly 60 to 75 study days, giving your spaced repetition system enough time to stabilize long-term retention.

What vocabulary domains are most heavily tested in the Goethe A2 exam?

Professional correspondence and work routines (Büro, Kollege, kündigen), doctor visits and health insurance (Krankenkasse, Termin verschieben), and apartment hunting or housing issues (Mietvertrag, Reparatur, Nebenkosten).
