What "subject-restricted" means — the route's one hard limit
The 12+1 route buys direct admission to your previous field of study and closely related subjects. A year of B.Com opens commerce and business adjacent degrees; a year of B.Sc. Physics opens physics and its neighbours. It does not open arbitrary subject switches: a year of engineering does not qualify you for medicine, and a humanities year does not switch into engineering. Practical consequences:
- Choose the Indian bachelor's year as if it were your German application — because it is. The field you enrol in India defines what Germany will let you apply to.
- "Closely related" is judged by the universities against their course descriptions; when in doubt, ask the admissions office of the exact course before betting a year on it.
- If your target subject differs from your Indian one, the Studienkolleg route — not 12+1 — is the honest fit.
The +1 year: what counts and what doesn't
- Counts: one full academic year (both semesters) completed and passed in a regular bachelor's program at a recognized Indian institution — the announcement's words are "successfully completed".
- Doesn't count: an incomplete year, a year with backlogs uncleared, diploma programs outside a bachelor's structure, and distance/open-university enrollments where recognition is doubtful — check the institution against the anabin database, the same source APS applies.
- The grey zone — already studied 2 or 3 years? The criteria describe a minimum, not a maximum: completed years strengthen the case, but the subject restriction and the universities' own credit-transfer rules now govern how much of your Indian study a German bachelor's will even count. Expect to start near the beginning; treat any transferred credits as a bonus.

Class XII result in hand — decide the Indian year deliberately
The 70% floor and the subject link both live in decisions made now: the board score on paper, and a bachelor's enrolment whose field matches the German target. Applicants below 70% at Class XII should plan the improvement (or the Studienkolleg route) before anything else.

Start APS during the Indian first year
The APS certificate is valid for life, takes 3–8 weeks, and its eligibility assessment (via the official quiz) tells you early whether your profile fits 12+1. Starting it inside year one removes the document from the critical path entirely.

Complete and pass the Indian year
The +1 must be successfully completed — both semesters, no uncleared backlogs — before the route exists for you. Transcripts of the completed year become part of the application set.

Applications run through uni-assist (many universities want the VPD, which converts your Indian grade into the German system) or directly where the university allows. Deadlines are receipt deadlines — the uni-assist clock is not inside them.

With the admission letter: open the blocked account (€11,904 for 2026), book the visa appointment, file the national visa (D) application. The student-visa stage is identical for every route — the 12+1 difference ended at admission.

What does the German language require on the 12+1 route?
