Read that again slowly. You can be excellent on paper — and if the paired conversation for sixteen minutes goes below A2, the exam does not even produce a certificate for you to frame. Most candidates study exactly backwards: weeks on reading gaps, a shrug for the oral. The gate does not care about your average. It cares about one room, one partner, sixteen minutes. In real life, you ask people to repeat themselves. In Hören Teil 1, you cannot — four announcements, four answers, and while you are still writing your name the second one is already talking. Everyone who has sat the real exam describes this exact moment: the panic of the pen falling behind the voice. It is trainable. That is the point.

The answer that looks like giving up

Somewhere in the ads task, one situation has NO match — and the correct answer is to write X. It feels wrong. Every instinct screams keep looking. The candidates who lose the point are the ones who trusted that instinct for four minutes. The ones who practised the X just write it and move on. Four minutes, one point — now multiply that by every task in the paper.

The sentence you didn't write

The letter task scores four points of content — and a missing one does not cost you a point, it drops a whole band. Eight points sit on that criterion. Nobody warns you; the examiner just marks it. Our model letters show what "all four covered" actually looks like in 70 words — so in the exam it is a checklist, not a discovery.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ACTUALLY ASK BEFORE BUYING

  • What is the pass mark for the DTZ?

    There is no single pass line — the DTZ reports THREE sections separately and the certificate comes from their combination: Hören+Lesen (45 points, B1 from 33, A2 from 20), Schreiben (20 points, B1 from 15, A2 from 7) and Sprechen (100 points, B1 from 75, A2 from 35). A B1 certificate requires Sprechen on B1 AND at least one written section on B1; an A2 certificate requires Sprechen at A2 or better plus one written section at A2 or better.

  • Why does Sprechen decide everything?

    Because it is the gate: below A2 in the oral exam there is NO certificate at all — regardless of how many points the written half scored. A candidate with a perfect written half and 30 oral points leaves with nothing. It is the single most expensive thing a DTZ candidate can fail to know, and it is why this kit's Sprechen materials focus on the three Teile and their formulas rather than on general conversation.

  • How long is the DTZ exam?

    The written half is 100 minutes in one block with no breaks: Hören 25 minutes (four announcements heard only ONCE, everything else twice), Lesen 45 minutes over five very different Teile, Schreiben 30 minutes for one half-formal letter on four Leitpunkte. The oral exam takes about 15–16 minutes as a PAIR exam — Teil 1 talking about yourself, Teil 2 describing a picture, Teil 3 planning something together — with no preparation time. A solo exam is possible.

  • Is the DTZ the same as Goethe or telc B1?

    No — and treating them as interchangeable is a preparation mistake. The DTZ is the integration-course final examination, developed by g.a.s.t. on behalf of BAMF, assessing A2–B1 in one scaled test. Its B1 result is recognized for naturalization and the settlement permit (together with the Leben-in-Deutschland test), but the paper differs from every certification exam: three separately reported bands instead of one score, the Sprechen gate, and everyday integration-course formats. Preparing on a Goethe B1 paper rehearses a different machine.

  • Can I repeat the DTZ if one section is weak?

    You can retake the exam as many times as you like — but always the ENTIRE exam, never a single section. Integration-course participants are entitled to one free retake after 300 additional hours of instruction; after that, sittings are paid. There is no carrying over of a good section result: every sitting starts from zero, which is exactly why rehearsing the whole 100-minute written block under the clock matters.

  • Is this an official DTZ paper?

    No — and the page says so plainly. These are Germanium's own mock papers, calibrated line by line against the official format published by g.a.s.t. (the exam developer) and the free Übungssätze at gast.de/dtz, including the per-section bands and the certificate combination rule. The official Übungssätze are free and worth doing — but they are exactly two sittings, and once you have seen them there is nothing left to sit under a clock.
