Recognition is the Italy track's real bureaucracy. The border asks nothing of an Italian graduate; the career asks for documents — and the Italian-language web around them mixes up two different procedures with two different authorities, which is how applications go to the wrong office and months disappear. The map is simpler than the agencies make it: one free database tells you where you stand, one €208 certificate covers most professional needs, and one fork — regulated professions — sends you to a completely different authority with a German gate attached.
Step zero: the free anabin check, five minutes
Before any application, check your institution in anabin (anabin.kmk.org ↗) — the German authorities' own database of foreign higher-education systems. Italian universities come out of this check better than almost any system: the great majority carry H+ status, meaning recognised in Germany for higher-education purposes. The status letter decides the road: H+ is the green light; H+/− means case-by-case treatment; H− means the degree alone does not open German doors. This check is free, takes minutes, and is the step Italian agency pages skip — because selling the €208 application is easier than qualifying whether you need one.

Who actually needs one: applicants to public-sector jobs (the certificate is often requested), anyone whose employer asks for a German-readable proof of the degree, and — historically — non-EU visa applicants. An Italian usually needs none of that to start working: the EU right of free movement means the degree conversation happens with the employer, not a consulate. The honest framing: the ZAB statement is a career lubricant, bought by the people who know where their file will land — not a legal requirement of being Italian and employed in Germany. That distinction is exactly what the agencies blur, because the €208 fee is their commission's backdrop.
The fork: regulated professions go somewhere else entirely
If your profession is regulated in Germany — nursing, medicine, teaching, and the listed crafts and titles — the ZAB statement is not your document and the ZAB is not your authority. The competent authority is the Land that will licence you, and the procedure is professional recognition, not degree comparison: your Italian training is compared module-by-module against the German curriculum, and the gaps decide between direct recognition, an adaptation course, or a knowledge exam. This is the same honest fork the site documents for the Turkish nursing road; the machinery is EU-wide, and Italy rides it from the advantageous side — Directive 2005/36/EC gives EU qualifications their own fast lane that third-country files do not have.

The German gate nobody prices in
Across both lanes, the recurring requirement is not paper — it is certified German: B2 before a nursing contract is signed, C1 before a classroom, B1 before the citizenship application at the end of every road. Italy's infrastructure covers it: the Goethe-Institut runs the full A1–C2 ladder in Milan and Rome with 2026 calendars published, telc and ÖSD run through partner centres. The exam is the gate; rehearsal is what this site sells — start with the A1 kit, target the B1 kit if your road runs through recognition or citizenship, and the 77-day plan is the rhythm that gets the certificate inside the calendar year instead of the next one.

Devo fare il riconoscimento per lavorare come infermiere?
Sì: l'infermieristica è una professione regolamentata e la procedura è il riconoscimento professionale presso l'autorità competente del Land — non la ZAB. Serve un certificato di tedesco B2 (Goethe, telc o ÖSD secondo il Land), il confronto del piano di studi e, in alcuni casi, un corso di adattamento o un esame di conoscenze. Come cittadina UE seguite la corsia della direttiva 2005/36/CE, più rapida di quella per i paesi terzi.
Il diploma di maturità italiano serve per iscriversi all'università in Germania?
