How the 6-Point Chancenkarte Matrix Works

The Opportunity Card (*Chancenkarte* under §20a of the German Residence Act — AufenthG) enables qualified foreign professionals to enter Germany for up to **12 months** to seek qualified employment without an existing job offer.

Before points are evaluated, all applicants must satisfy the **mandatory baseline requirements**:

  • Recognized Qualification: At least 2 years of vocational training recognized by the state in your home country, or a recognized foreign university degree.
  • Language Baseline: Certified German at level A1 (Goethe, telc, ÖSD) OR certified English at level B2 (IELTS 5.5–6.5, TOEFL, Cambridge).
  • Proof of Livelihood: Verifiable funds of at least €1,091 per month (€13,092 for the full 12-month card), typically proven via an official blocked account (*Sperrkonto*) or a binding secondary part-time job contract in Germany.

The Highest-Leverage Point Boosters

If you score 4 or 5 points on the calculator, the fastest way to bridge the gap is German language proficiency:

Language Point Allocations:

  • German A2: +1 point
  • German B1: +2 points (sufficient to push most applicants over the 6-point line)
  • German B2: +3 points
  • English C1: +1 point (IELTS 7.0+)
