The Two Golden Rules of DTZ Scoring
Unlike standard CEFR exams where scores are simply averaged across sections, the DTZ exam follows a specific non-linear decision tree set by BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees) and g.a.s.t.:
1. The Speaking Gate (Sprechen ist Pflicht)
To earn a B1 Certificate, you MUST score at least 75 out of 100 points in Sprechen. If your speaking falls into the A2 band (35–74.5 points), your overall outcome is automatically capped at an A2 Certificate, even if you achieved 100% on both written modules.
2. The Written Support Rule
Once the speaking gate is satisfied at B1 level, you only need at least ONE of the two written sections to also achieve B1 level:
- Hören & Lesen: ≥ 33 out of 45 items OR
- Schreiben: ≥ 15 out of 20 points
Official Point Bands by Section

|---|---|---|---|
| Hören & Lesen | 45 | 20 – 32 pts | 33 – 45 pts |
| Schreiben | 20 | 7 – 14 pts | 15 – 20 pts |
| Sprechen (Oral) | 100 | 35 – 74.5 pts | 75 – 100 pts |
