INTEGRATION LAW DUAL-REQUIREMENT
Passing the LiD is only half of the requirement.
Under §10 StAG, naturalization authorities require both the 17-point test score and a certified B1 German Language Certificate (such as the DTZ or Goethe B1). Ensure you pass your language exam on your first attempt without delay.
Understanding the Test Formats: LiD vs. Einbürgerungstest
Both the Test „Leben in Deutschland“ (LiD) and the Einbürgerungstest utilize the exact same pool of 310 official questions prepared by the BAMF (consisting of 300 general questions on the legal order, history, and democracy in Germany, plus 10 state-specific questions for each federal state).
| Purpose | Pass Threshold | Certificate Issued | Legal Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Permanent Residence (*Niederlassungserlaubnis*) | 15 of 33 correct | Nachweis der Rechts- und Gesellschaftsordnung | §9 Abs. 2 Nr. 8 / §18c AufenthG |
| German Citizenship (*Einbürgerung*) | 17 of 33 correct | Zertifikat Einbürgerungstest / LiD | §10 Abs. 1 Nr. 7 StAG |
The Two Required Components for Naturalization
Under the modernized 2024–2026 German Citizenship Act (StAG), naturalization applicants must independently satisfy:
- Civic Knowledge: Achieving at least 17/33 on the LiD / Einbürgerungstest.
- Language Proficiency: Demonstrating certified B1 German through the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ), Goethe-Zertifikat B1, or telc Deutsch B1.
- Economic Self-Sufficiency: Securing one's own livelihood without claims to Bürgergeld.
