The 2026 German Citizenship (*Einbürgerung*) Rules
Following Germany’s nationality law reform (effective 27 June 2024 and operating throughout 2026), the core naturalization criteria under StAG §10 are:
- Standard Residence: 5 years of lawful habitual residence in Germany (reduced from the previous 8-year requirement).
- Certified B1 German: An official CEFR certificate (Goethe-Zertifikat B1, telc Deutsch B1, ÖSD B1, or the DTZ integration test). There is no waiver for this requirement.
- Civic Knowledge Test: Passing the Leben in Deutschland test or Einbürgerungstest (at least 17 out of 33 multiple-choice questions correct).
- Secured Livelihood: Self-sufficient financial support without claiming Bürgergeld (citizen’s allowance).
- Multiple Citizenship Allowed: Germany now explicitly permits dual and multiple citizenship for all applicants — you no longer have to surrender your home country passport.
