VON GERMANIUM

Editorial desk — calibrated against Goethe-Zertifikat A2 Modellsatz and Durchführungsbestimmungen

The Goethe-Zertifikat A2 marks a decisive shift from A1: where Start Deutsch 1 repeats almost every dialogue twice and uses predictable vocabulary, Goethe A2 introduces natural conversational cadence, distractor traps, and strict time constraints. The Lesen (Reading) and Hören (Listening) modules take 30 minutes each, contributing 50 of the 100 total points toward your certificate. You can benchmark your real timing right now on our free timed Goethe A2 Paper 1 diagnostic test.

The Goethe A2 Scoring Machine & Passing Thresholds

Unlike Goethe B1 (which is fully modular), Goethe A1 and A2 are comprehensive, non-modular examinations. You sit all four papers in a single examination sitting. To earn your certificate, you must satisfy three conditions simultaneously:

Hören: The Single-Broadcast Trap (Teil 2 & Teil 3)

The single biggest reason candidates drop below the 15-point threshold on Hören is failure to prepare for the single-playback tracks (played ONCE only) in the middle of the test:

  • Teil 1 (5 items, Multiple Choice a/b/c — PLAYED TWICE): Five independent informational announcements and voicemail clips. Use play 1 to understand the situation; use play 2 to lock in numbers, times, and dates.
  • Teil 2 (5 items, Picture Matching a–i — PLAYED ONCE ONLY!): A single sustained conversation between two colleagues or friends (e.g., assigning party tasks or room furniture). The dialogue moves without pauses. If you hesitate on item 7, you will miss the cues for items 8 and 9.
  • Teil 3 (5 items, Multiple Choice a/b/c — PLAYED ONCE ONLY!): Five short transactional dialogues. Here, exam writers intentionally mention all three options in the audio track, but rule two out ("The red sweater looks nice, but it's 80 euros... let's take the blue jacket instead"). Never circle the first noun you hear.
  • Teil 4 (5 items, Ja/Nein — PLAYED TWICE): A continuous radio interview with a guest. Items are arranged strictly in chronological order of the broadcast.

Lesen: Managing 20 Questions in 30 Minutes

You have exactly 30 minutes for 20 questions in the Reading section. That gives you 90 seconds per question, which must include reading the source text, eliminating wrong choices, and recording your answer on the optical answer sheet.

  • Teil 1 (Items 1–5 — Newspaper Article / Portrait): A short article (~150–180 words) followed by 5 multiple-choice questions. Watch for synonyms: the question will use a different verb or noun than the text (e.g., question says spät ankommen, text says Verspätung haben).
  • Teil 2 (Items 6–10 — Facility Directory Board): A directional building plan ("In welchen Bereich gehen Sie?"). If none of the floors or departments match the customer's exact need, the correct answer is option c (in einen anderen Bereich).
  • Teil 3 (Items 11–15 — Personal Message / Email): An informal email from a colleague or acquaintance testing reading for specific facts (dates, locations, required favors).
  • Teil 4 (Items 16–20 — Classified Advertisements): Match 6 reader situations against ads a–f. Exactly one person has no matching ad, which must be marked with an x on the answer sheet.

Interactive Self-Diagnostic: Goethe A2 Hören & Lesen Stamina

  • [ ] Single-Playback Resilience: In Hören Teil 2 and Teil 3, do you remain calm and commit to an answer without waiting for an impossible second audio replay?
  • [ ] 90-Second Reading Pacing: Can you solve all 5 questions of Lesen Teil 1 in under 7.5 minutes without getting trapped trying to translate every unknown noun?
  • [ ] Directory Board 'Other Area' Recognition: In Lesen Teil 2, do you recognize when a service isn't listed on the department directory and mark option c (in einen anderen Bereich)?
  • [ ] Negative Filtering in Classifieds: In Lesen Teil 4, can you identify the single reader request whose strict conditions match NONE of the classified ads and mark x?

Can I retake only the Goethe A2 Hören or Lesen section if I fail?

No. Unlike Goethe B1, Goethe A2 is non-modular. If your written total falls below 45/75 or your total score is under 60/100, you must retake all four papers (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen) and pay the full examination fee again.

Is there a penalty for wrong guesses on Goethe A2 multiple choice?

No. There is zero negative marking on Goethe exams. If you run out of time on Lesen or miss an audio prompt in Hören, always mark an answer on the Antwortbogen—leaving a bubble blank forfeits a free 33% statistical chance.

How many raw points do I need to clear the 60% mark in Hören and Lesen?

Each module contains 20 raw questions multiplied by 1.25 to reach 25 scaled points. To reach 60% (15/25 scaled points), you must score at least 12 correct out of 20 in Lesen and 12 correct out of 20 in Hören.
