Which German exam for Kenyan nurses: A2 to enter, B1 to work, B2 to register — and the Nairobi exam reality

The German level ladder for Kenyan nurses: A2 partnership-visa floor, B1 working level, B2 registration gate — and the Goethe/ÖSD-only Nairobi exam list.

VON GERMANIUM

Editorial desk — the German Embassy Nairobi's visa-for-recognition leaflet (read directly), gesetze-im-internet.de (§16d AufenthG) and anerkennung-in-deutschland.de

Three German levels do three different jobs on the Kenyan nursing road, and the agencies and WhatsApp groups flatten them into one number. The statute and the recognition authorities draw the ladder precisely: A2 opens the recognition-visa and recognition-partnership door, B1 is the working floor and the Ausbildung-visa level, B2 — plus, in most states, a nursing-language exam — turns your Kenyan qualification into a full German license. Kenya adds one more layer the multi-country guides miss: which certificates the Nairobi embassy actually accepts.

The ladder: three levels, three jobs

LevelWhat it actually doesWhich exam
A2The floor for the recognition visa (§16d) and the recognition-partnership route — the Embassy Nairobi leaflet states it directly: language skills "at least at level A2". For nursing, several state authorities expect B1 at application — confirm with your destination authority in writingGoethe A2, ÖSD A2
B1The practical working floor (nursing-assistant work runs on B1); the level the Ausbildung visa (§16a) normally requires; what employer-direct contracts ask forGoethe B1, ÖSD B1
B2The level that earns the full registration as Pflegefachkraft — the recognition authorities' standardGoethe B2, ÖSD B2 — plus the state's nursing-language exam where it runs one (the telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege is the dedicated exam, sat in Germany)

Where and how to prepare

The German-class layer in Kenya is real and geographically spread: Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu and Nakuru all run private courses (typical tuition around 15,000 KSh/month over roughly six months to B1), and Goethe-Institut Nairobi plus the ÖSD partner centers are the examination venues. The honest cost picture: the course is the cheap part — the project is the hours. B1 from zero is 6–12 months of structured study; the exam fees and the one-year certificate clock mean you should book the exam when the level is genuinely near, not as motivation.

The recognition procedure around the language gate

The language proof is one layer of the recognition file. The Land authority issues the Defizitbescheid (deficit notice) naming the gaps, closed by an adaptation course (Anpassungslehrgang) or a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung). The state fork — general B2 accepted (Bavaria among others) versus a specialist Fachsprachprüfung Pflege — works exactly as the Philippines track describes it, Land by Land; the Philippines track's ladder article carries the fork in full. The one Kenya-specific document habit from the embassy checklist worth repeating: the gapless CV in German — most Kenyan applications are delayed by a CV with gaps or an English-only CV, not by the language certificate.

Which exam to book, and when

  1. 01Planning the Ausbildung visa: target B1 — it is the visa's normal requirement and the training floor.
  2. 02Planning the recognition visa or partnership: confirm the destination state's expectation in writing (A2 floor, B1 increasingly expected for nursing), then book the matching Goethe/ÖSD exam.
  3. 03Applying to employers directly: B1 as the working floor, B2 as the registration goal — hospital employers want the B2 path visible.
  4. 04Already in Germany: book B2 immediately if you hold only B1 — and note the module rule: retaking one module does not refresh the certificate's date.

Is telc accepted for Kenyan applicants?

German authorities accept telc certificates as a class — but there is no telc examination center in Kenya, and the Nairobi embassy's leaflet names Goethe-Institut and ÖSD as the bodies issuing recognized certificates in Kenya. If you sit telc, you sit it in Germany; for the Nairobi filing, Goethe or ÖSD is the practical choice.

My B1 certificate is 14 months old. Does it still count?

Not for the Nairobi filing — the embassy applies a one-year currency window (and the oldest-module rule for partial retakes). A fresh exam is the fix; plan the certificate date against your actual filing date, not your study date.

How long does B1 to B2 take?

Realistically 4–8 months of structured study on top of B1, longer alongside full-time work. The kit pages on this site rehearse the exact exam formats for both levels.
