Which German exam for Nigerian nurses: A2 to enter, B1 to work, B2 to register — and the Lagos exam reality

The German level ladder for Nigerian nurses: A2 partnership-visa floor, B1 working level, B2 registration gate — plus the Goethe-only Lagos exam rule.

VON GERMANIUM

Editorial desk — the German missions' language-skills page for Nigeria (read directly), gesetze-im-internet.de (§16d AufenthG) and anerkennung-in-deutschland.de

Three German levels do three different jobs on the Nigerian nursing road, and the agency pages flatten them into one number — usually "B2", which is true only at the end. The statute and the recognition authorities draw the ladder precisely: A2 opens the recognition-visa and recognition-partnership door, B1 is the working floor and the Ausbildung-visa level, B2 — plus, in most states, a nursing-language exam — turns your Nigerian qualification into a full German license. Nigeria adds its own exam-market layer: where you can actually sit the accepted certificates.

The ladder: three levels, three jobs

LevelWhat it actually doesWhich exam
A2The floor for the recognition visa (§16d) and the recognition-partnership route. For nursing, several state authorities expect B1 at application — confirm with your destination authority in writingGoethe A2 (sat in Lagos); ÖSD A2 (Lagos partner centers)
B1The practical working floor; the level the Ausbildung visa (§16a) normally requires; what employer-direct contracts ask forGoethe B1; ÖSD B1
B2The level that earns the full registration as PflegefachkraftGoethe B2, ÖSD B2 — plus the state's nursing-language exam where it runs one (the telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege is the dedicated exam, sat in Germany)

Where and how to prepare

The Lagos German-school layer is the visible pipeline — the DW-reported cohort of nurses training toward B1/B2 in the city's language schools, with Goethe-Institut's own intensive A1/A2 courses at its Yaba center as the benchmark. The honest cost picture is time, not tuition: B1 from zero is a 6–12-month project, B2 another 4–8 months on top. The smart sequencing for a newly licensed Nigerian nurse is forced by the NMCN gate anyway — the two-year post-licence window before verification eligibility is exactly the German-learning window; run them in parallel and the gate costs you nothing extra.

The recognition procedure around the language gate

The language proof is one layer of the recognition file. The Land authority issues the Defizitbescheid (deficit notice) naming the gaps, closed by an adaptation course (Anpassungslehrgang) or a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung). The state fork — general B2 accepted (Bavaria among others) versus a specialist Fachsprachprüfung Pflege — works Land by Land exactly as the Philippines track's ladder article describes; the machinery is country-agnostic. The Nigerian-specific document habit: the NMCN verification letter chain must be complete before the German authority asks for it — a recognition file missing the verified-certificate layer stalls at the first request.

Which exam to book, and when

  1. 01Newly licensed (inside the NMCN two-year window): start German immediately; book A1→B1 across the window; file NMCN verification when eligible.
  2. 02Planning the Ausbildung visa: target B1 — the visa's normal requirement and the training floor.
  3. 03Planning the recognition visa or partnership: confirm the destination state's expectation in writing, then book the matching Goethe exam in Lagos.
  4. 04Applying to employers directly: B1 as the working floor, B2 as the registration goal — German care employers hiring Nigerian nurses want the B2 path visible.

Is telc accepted for Nigerian applicants?

German authorities accept telc certificates as a class — but there is no telc examination center in Nigeria, and the missions' rule for exams taken in Nigeria names Goethe-Institut only. Sit telc in Germany if a German employer arranges it; for a Lagos filing, Goethe (or ÖSD via its partners) is the practical choice.

Is English enough for the German exam?

No — the exams test German, and English fluency earns nothing at a German ward. Nigeria's English advantage is real for the document chain and the employer interview, which is exactly why the German level is the one gate you cannot argue around.

How long does B1 to B2 take?

Realistically 4–8 months of structured study on top of B1, longer alongside full-time work. The kit pages on this site rehearse the exact exam formats for both levels.
