Editorial desk — calibrated against the official ÖSD Zertifikat A1 Modellsatzbroschüre and Probebewertung rubrics

Across the ÖSD Zertifikat A1 (Grundstufe Deutsch 1) examination, the productive skills carry 40 of the 100 total points: Sprechen is a standalone 25-point module (pass mark: 12/25), while Schreiben accounts for 15 points inside the Written Module (a 5-point banded form plus a 10-point email with a strict 4-point minimum floor). Unlike Listening or Reading—where unknown vocabulary can surprise you—100% of Sprechen and Schreiben can be prepared before exam day. For the full four-skill breakdown, read our ÖSD A1 Modelltest guide, or test yourself directly on our free timed ÖSD A1 Paper 1.

Part 1: ÖSD A1 Sprechen — 25 Points + 10 Minutes of Preparation

The biggest structural advantage of ÖSD A1 over Goethe A1 Sprechen is the 10-minute supervised preparation window before your oral exam starts. You receive the prompt sheet (Situationsblätter) and a stamped notepad (Notizblatt) to write down keywords, and you bring those notes into the examination room.

Speaking TaskOfficial FormatHigh-Scoring Strategy
Aufgabe 1: Sich vorstellen (Self-Introduction)Pick 4 out of 6 topic cards and say 2 simple sentences per card + answer 1–2 examiner follow-upsThe 6 topics are fixed: Name/Alter, Wohnort, Familie, Beruf, Sprachen, Hobbys — prepare all 6 at home, pick your cleanest 4
Aufgabe 2: Bild beschreiben (Photo Description)Pick 1 out of 3 photos and answer the 4 fixed questions printed on the sheet1. Was sehen Sie? · 2. Wie viele Personen? · 3. Wo sind sie? · 4. Was machen sie?
Aufgabe 3: Situation vorspielen (Role-Play)Act out a short transactional dialogue with the examiner based on the same photo from Task 2Customer/clerk, guest/waiter, patient/receptionist: greeting + 2 questions + polite request + goodbye

The 4-Sentence Photo Description Formula (Sprechen Aufgabe 2)

Do not waste points trying to describe what people are wearing or guessing the weather. Every ÖSD A1 photo card prints the exact same four guiding questions—answer each with one safe, grammatical A1 sentence:

  1. 01Was sehen Sie auf dem Bild? → Auf dem Bild sehe ich einen Markt / ein Geschäft / eine Küche und viel Obst.
  2. 02Wie viele Personen sehen Sie? → Ich sehe etwa vier Personen: zwei Frauen und zwei Männer. (Using etwa — "approximately" — protects you when background figures are hard to count.)
  3. 03Wo sind die Personen? → Die Personen sind auf dem Markt / im Supermarkt / am Bahnhof.
  4. 04Was machen die Personen? → Die Frau links kauft Äpfel. Der Mann rechts ist Verkäufer und gibt ihr eine Tasche. Sie sprechen zusammen.

Part 2: ÖSD A1 Schreiben — The Banded Form & 30-Word Email (15 Points)

You have 20 minutes for two writing tasks: Aufgabe 1 (Formular — 5 points) and Aufgabe 2 (Reply E-Mail — 10 points). Remember the killer rule: Aufgabe 2 has a mandatory floor of 4 out of 10 points—scoring 0 to 3 points on the email fails the entire Written Module regardless of your Reading and Listening scores.

  • Aufgabe 1: The 10-Item Banded Form (5 Points): You extract 10 items from a short scenario (fill-in lines plus Kreuz checkboxes). Grading is banded: `10 correct = 5 pts`, `9–8 = 4 pts`, `7–6 = 3 pts`, `5–4 = 2 pts`, `3–2 = 1 pt`. Spelling errors are not penalized as long as meaning is clear (Dopelzimmer still scores), but swapping Vorname (first name) and Nachname (surname) or confusing Nächte (nights) with Tage (days) costs a full item.
  • Aufgabe 2: The 30-Word Reply Email (10 Points, Min. 4 Floor): Every prompt gives you a short incoming message and 3 guiding questions (Leitfragen). Write an appropriate greeting (Liebe Maria, or Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,), write one simple verb-second sentence per question, and close with Viele Grüße or Mit freundlichen Grüßen plus your name.

  • 2. Replying to a Friend's Weekend Invitation: Lieber Markus, danke für deine E-Mail! Am Samstagabend habe ich Zeit und komme sehr gern zu dir. Ich bringe einen Salat und Orangensaft mit. Wie komme ich am besten zu deiner neuen Wohnung? Viele Grüße, Sarah.

Do spelling mistakes cost points on the ÖSD A1 form?

No, provided the meaning remains unambiguous. The official ÖSD grading instructions specify no deduction for orthographic slips on the form (Aufgabe 1) as long as the grader can clearly identify the intended word or date.

Can I use my Goethe A1 email templates for ÖSD A1?

Yes — Schreiben Aufgabe 2 on ÖSD A1 and Goethe A1 Schreiben Teil 2 both test a ~30-word message built around three prompt points. The crucial difference is that ÖSD enforces a 4/10 minimum floor on the email and pairs it with a 10-item banded form.
