The Sprachbausteine (Language Elements) subtest is unique to the telc B1 examination. It contains 20 multiple-choice items split across two parts and tests high-frequency German grammar: verb-preposition pairings, subclause connectors (weil, obwohl, dass), relative pronouns, and adjective endings.
Structure Breakdown: Teil 1 vs Teil 2
| Subtest | Format | Answer Options | Core Grammar Tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teil 1 (10 gaps) | Informal e-mail / letter to a friend | Pool of 15 words (A–O) | Prepositions (warten auf, sich freuen über), pronouns, fixed phrases |
| Teil 2 (10 gaps) | Formal article, notice or informational text | 3 choices per item (a / b / c) | Adjective declensions, connectors (weil, da, wenn, als), reflexive verbs |
3 Golden Rules to Never Lose Points in Sprachbausteine
- 1. Look at the Verb First: In 60% of gap-fill items, the missing word is governed by a preceding verb. E.g. interessieren für (+ Akkusativ), teilnehmen an (+ Dativ).
- 2. Check the Verb Position for Connectors: If the conjugated verb is kicked to the end of the clause, the connector must be a subordinate conjunction (weil, dass, obwohl), not a coordinating one (denn, aber, und).
- 3. Adjective Endings Depend on the Article: Determine whether the article is definite (der/die/das), indefinite (ein/eine), or zero-article (Nullartikel) before selecting the ending (-e, -en, -er, -es).
