How Austria’s Points Grid Functions (2026 Regulations)

Under §12 and §12a of the Austrian Foreign Employment Act (Ausländerbeschäftigungsgesetz – AuslBG), applications are evaluated by the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS). Points are granted cumulatively across four primary categories: educational qualification, relevant professional history, age, and language proficiency in German (ÖSD/Goethe certificates) or English.

Language Requirements: ÖSD vs. Goethe-Zertifikat

Austrian consular missions accept certified German language diplomas issued by the Austrian Language Diploma (ÖSD) and the Goethe-Institut. Language levels are awarded up to 15 points:

  • German A1 (ÖSD Zertifikat A1 / Goethe A1): 5 points
  • German A2 (ÖSD Zertifikat A2 / Goethe A2): 10 points
  • German B1 (ÖSD Zertifikat B1 / Goethe B1): 15 points
