Unlike standard Goethe or telc exams that grade Listening and Reading as separate hurdles, the DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) merges Hören (~25 minutes) and Lesen (45 minutes) into a single 45-point pool. To earn a B1 band on this combined block, you must score at least 33 out of 45 points (73.3% accuracy; 20–32 points awards an A2 band). That gives you a maximum cushion of 12 missed items across all 9 parts. Benchmark your exact score across all 9 parts on our free DTZ diagnostic Mock 1.

The Complete 9-Part DTZ Hören & Lesen Blueprint (70 Minutes, 45 Points)

SectionTask FormatAudio Plays / Target TimePrimary Distractor Trap
Hören Teil 14 public announcements or voicemails (Ansagen / Durchsagen, a/b/c)ONCE ONLY (EINMAL)Two mentioned times/places where the first is canceled or negated
Hören Teil 25 radio reports, weather, traffic, or store ads (Radiomeldungen, a/b/c)Short radio broadcastsKeyword echoing: hearing a word from option b that applies to someone else
Hören Teil 3Everyday dialogues at work, an office, or school (Alltagsdialoge)Everyday dialoguesYes/No reversals (Nein, ich nehme das Fahrrad statt den Zug)
Hören Teil 4Multi-speaker radio discussion: match statements to speakers (Wer sagt das?)TWICE (ZWEIMAL)Confusing the moderator's question with a guest's personal experience
Lesen Teil 15 situations matched against a course catalog or building directory (a/b/c)7 minutesMatching only 1 of the person's 2 constraints (e.g., right topic, wrong day)
Lesen Teil 25 people's needs matched against 8 classified ads (a–h) + `X`9 minutesForcing a near-miss letter when no ad matches all criteria (must mark `X`)
Lesen Teil 3Newspaper article or formal letter (3× richtig/falsch + 3× a/b/c)11 minutesQuantifier swaps: etwa die Hälfte (half) in text vs alle (all) in the statement
Lesen Teil 4Official policy sheet or workplace leaflet (Merkblatt, 3× richtig/falsch)6 minutesNegation and sequence words: NICHT zuerst, sofort, auch kleine Unfälle
Lesen Teil 5Formal colleague/business letter (6 items, a/b/c)12 minutesMixing up conditions for the current employee vs the new Friday role

Hören Strategy: How to Survive the 25-Minute Audio Block

  • Hören Teil 1 (Played ONCE — Underline Before the Audio Starts): Use the 10-second pause before each announcement to underline the question word (Wo? Wann? Was?) and the core noun in options a, b, c. In DTZ announcements, speakers routinely mention an old deadline first before stating the real one („bis Freitag gilt nicht mehr — bitte melden Sie sich bis Montag, 12 Uhr“). Wait until the sentence finishes before marking.
  • Hören Teil 3 (Everyday Dialogues): Focus on what the speakers decide at the end of the exchange, not the first proposal. If a colleague asks „Fahren Sie morgen mit dem Zug?“ and Frau Ates replies „Nein, ich nehme das Fahrrad, das ist schneller“, the statement „Die Frau fährt mit dem Zug“ is falsch.
  • *Hören Teil 4 (Opinion Matching — Wer sagt das?): On the first listen, map each voice to their role (e.g., a = der Kursleiter, b = eine Frau, die den Kurs gemacht hat, c = der Chef*). On the second listen, verify who expressed each specific claim.

Lesen Strategy: Mastering the 45-Minute Reading Block

  • Lesen Teil 1 (Catalogs & Boards): Treat every item as a two-filter checklist (Time/Day + Cost/Certificate). In our DTZ Mock 1, Rahim needs little money AND personal help in a small group — which locks in the free Friday beginner course over the paid A2 evening class.
  • *Lesen Teil 4 (Workplace & Municipal Merkblatt): Circle modal verbs and restrictors (dürfen NICHT, müssen SOFORT, nur, ohne). In workplace accident sheets (Arbeitsunfall), the rule states you may not visit your regular family doctor (Hausarzt) first — you must see a Durchgangsarzt*.
  • *Transfer Answers to the Antwortbogen After Each Part: Unlike Listening (which gives you 5 transfer minutes at the end), the 45-minute Reading + 30-minute Writing clock requires you to manage your own bubble sheet. Transfer your Reading answers right after finishing Lesen Teil 5* before you start writing your letter.

Can I still get an overall B1 certificate if I score 29/45 (A2) on DTZ Hören & Lesen?

Yes! Under official BAMF/g.a.s.t. certification rules, you earn an overall B1 certificate if you pass Speaking at B1 (≥48/100 points) AND reach B1 in at least ONE of the two written blocks. A 15/20 B1 score in Schreiben rescues an A2 score (20–32 points) in Hören & Lesen.
